Penland School of Crafts Annual Benefit Auction

As a resident artist here at Penland I have been invited to donate work to the 27th Annual Penland School of Crafts Benefit Auction. Looking at the list of artists who have donated in the past reminds me just how amazing this school really is. I decided to donate a piece which means a lot to me to say thank you for the opportunity I have been given here, up in these hills amongst all these crazy talented people. Come check it out August 10th and 11th, tickets are available online.

WORKS ON PAPER

Thanks to a dear studio friend who offered me the use of her press recently I tried my hand at printing for the first time. Like many people I know, I immediately felt drawn to printing and felt it could have been my artistic focus. I knew, though, that for now I needed to use it as a simple tool and part of my ongoing process. I began by etching a zinc plate and printing a grid that was to scale for the size of my entry piece in the BAM: High Fiber Diet show this Fall. I then created collage quilts of color using transfered magazine ink and created a third layer of handpainted quilt patterns. None of my work is ever complete until I wash on black india ink, letting it absorb into the exposed surface of the paper while slowly pulling it off of the main image. Check out the new portfolio and tell me what you think!
